KML Creatives Giveaway!

OK, I usually don't participate in all the hoopla of giveaways and the hoops that you need to jump through. This one, however, I really like. I love the products that Kristen Marie Brown-Bates has on her KML Creatives site (can find all sorts of info on FB, KML Creatives) and the vendors that she has are amazing. Everyone should check out those vendors. They are very talented people with so much to share.

What do we do on a Rainy Day?

What do you do on a rainy day? Especially when you have a child to entertain?

Well, today I spent the day with my daughter Vanessa. That's right, just the two of us. We went shopping at Lowe's, built a flower garden and planted a few flowers. We also got out the "Off Camera Flash" set up and practiced (always practicing to keep up, and try new techniques). Today we tried something a little different. I let Nessa decide where the lights should be positioned, if they should be "bright" or "soft", and then we set the camera up on timer so she could take some of the pictures of us together (she also took some of just me...).

Here's what a 4 year old can do with a little encouragement. Always let a childs' creativity flow.

Spring is Here!

Spring is finally here, and we've been outside enjoying it as much as possible. Here are a few pictures taken in the front yard, with Jamie's daughters and the neighbor girls. Both Mela and Vanessa absolutely enjoy spending some time with the neighbors, and sometimes they are willing to let mom take some pictures (doesn't happen very often, I usually have to bribe them).

We hope you are enjoying the warmer weather, the sunshine, and soon the summertime fun. Remember, always use sunblock, especially on the younger kids.

Making a Picture into a Portrait

Here is a photo that was taken of my niece, Kayleigh. It's a great picture of her, not so great of the background. Sometimes this just can't be helped, you see an opportunity and want the shot, but the background is distracting and just not right for the subject.

In this photo, I've manipulated the background in a way that it appears completely different. Using a few techniques in Photoshop, I softened the background. Then I've added what is called a texture as another layer. See below for the before and after.

Holiday Photographs

The holidays have arrived. With the passing of Thanksgiving, we are well into the holiday buzz, and enjoying the time we get to spend with our friends and family. Every day is one day closer to the big day filled with blessings and kindness.

At K and J Photography, we take many pictures of our own families dressed up and having a good time. We hope that you will be able to capture memories of your days with loved ones as well.

In anticipation for a Senior Portrait shoot tomorrow, I spent a little time today preparing. I was able to use my girls (again) for practice. Only spent a couple minutes with them, here are the pictures:

Brad and I went to an Easter egg hunt in Asheville and one of the mom's had her camera, but didn't have a media card.

She asked if I could get a few snapshots of her children, so of course I took advantage of the situation. This is the result. Taken in natural light (no flash).

New Baby

I had the opportunity to photograph a beautiful baby girl. She is the daughter of a coworker of mine.

Although she was somewhat aggravated by the happenings, I was able to get a few very nice shots.

First Blog

Wow, just now setting up a blog. Not sure how this will go, but thought I'd dive in and give it a try.

My sister (Keri) and I have always had a fascination and love for photography. Our mom would let us take pictures of...mostly the cats...while growing up. I can't imagine how much that cost our parents, because the pictures were not good.

Several years ago, Keri thought it might be fun to start a photography business. She was right, as usual. That was when K and J Photography began. Since then, we've taken many photos, some great, and some that could be lost forever to spare the world.

Here is one of my favorites from my daughters 3rd birthday photo shoot. I was so lucky to get her to sit still for just a few minutes while I flashed the camera at her (thanks to Dora the Explorer).
